Current List of Needs

THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MEDICAL CLINIC AND CAFETERIA

Construction of a medical clinic and cafeteria at the Heart of Grace High School in Lower Johnsonville, Liberia is underway. We currently do not provide food for over 1,500 children that we cater to. And there is also no medical clinic in the entire community of over seventeen thousand people. Nothing less than five of our precious children come to school with either chronic Malaria or Fever every single day that we have to take to hospital at our own expense because the parents are just too poor to pay hospital bills for their children. This all important piece of project will cost approximately $50, 000 USD

TEACHER ADOPTION PROGRAM

The Heart of Grace Elementary School is tuition-free to students because all school overhead is funded by money raised in Louisiana.  We currently need people who are willing to adopt a teacher or staff member by paying his/her salary for a 9-month school year.  Monthly salaries range from $80 - $185 per month.  A picture of the chosen teacher, including biographical information, will be provided to sponsors.

UNIFORM FUND

In order to attend school, parents must only provide a uniform, shoes, a notebook and pencils at a cost of $13 per child, and still some can’t afford it.  The uniform fund will be distributed to students on an as-needed basis.

RELIEF MATERIALS SHIPPING CONTAINER

Many items we use in daily life in America are not available in Liberia.  Technology lags far behind western standards and, if available, basic books, furniture and equipment is expensive relative to local earning potential.  Annually, we ship donated items to support school and other community programs in Liberia.  We are once again in the process of gathering items to fill another 40-foot container, which we hope to ship in June or July of 2012.  Shipping, port fees and local transportation costs approximate $10,000 per shipment.

GENERATOR

Since the power grid in Liberia was destroyed in the war, all power in the country is produced by generators.  The 7.5kW generator at the school does not have the capacity to handle our growing needs.  A 30kW generator may be purchased in Liberia for approximately $17,000 including transportation and installation.

LAPTOPS FOR COMPUTER TRAINING CENTER GRADUATES

The 842 Computer Training Center teaches Microsoft Office skills to young adults who were denied educational opportunities during their youth due to the civil war.  This 9-month program educates approximately 100 students per year.  With your donation of $100, Change Agent Network will purchase a laptop computer for a graduate.

COMPUTER DONATIONS

The 842 Computer Training Center utilizes used computers and printers collected in Louisiana to operate its program.  Donations in excess of the needs of the school are distributed to other area schools and governmental agencies that lack equipment.

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

The effects of civil war further complicate the already difficult teenage and young adult years.  In order to start a Life Skills program, we need materials which address conflict resolution, leadership development, abstinence, HIV/AIDS, peer pressure, drug and alcohol, and other social issues.

SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM

Change Agent Network recognizes the importance of making its programs self-sustaining.  Our vision is to surround the schools with income-producing assets which will fully fund school expenses.  The assets in these programs will be owned by Change Agent Network but will be leased to local Liberians to operate, providing job opportunities for the community.

SCOOTERS

Scooters serve as taxis in Liberia.  Scooters are leased for $7 per day, 5 days per week, generating approximately $1,800 in annual income.  Income earned over the day-rate belongs to the operator.  Scooters may be purchased in Liberia for $1,100 each.  We currently have one scooter in operation.

SCHOOL BUSES

School buses will be leased on a day-rate basis to provide long-distance transportation service.  Used school buses may be purchased at Louisiana State government auctions for approximately $1,000 and shipped to Liberia for an additional $1,000.  We estimate that one bus will generate approximately $20,000 annually.

BUSINESS CENTERS

Much like FedEx Stores, Change Agent Network plans to open a business center in Monrovia to provide computer repair, computer processing, e-mail, fax, copying and internet services.  The center will provide job opportunities for graduates of the 842 Computer Training Center, and all profits will support school activities.  Store front rental and initial set-up costs are estimated at $5,000.

COMMUNITY NEEDS

Yassah’s Sisters: Yassah’s Sisters was formed by a group of Lafayette women to support the numerous single mothers in Liberia who have difficulty feeding their children.  In this pay-it-forward program, a woman receives a machete, hoe and ax and bags of peanuts, rice, beans, corn and okra seeds for planting.  After harvest they pay forward a bag and a half of seeds to the next woman.  Please see the Yassah’s Sisters tab for donation opportunities.

TRAVEL WITH A PURPOSE

Liberia 2012, we are early in the planning process for our trip to Liberia in 2012.  If you are interested in traveling with a purpose to make a difference in the lives of other less fortunate individuals of our world and fulfilling God’s plan for your life by being part of a bigger story, please contact Heather Lecky or Eric Willise Wowoh using the contact us form above on the navigation link.
